Basic Medicare is called Original Medicare. The Parts of Medicare are Part A and Part B. They each cover 80% of your medical bills, and if you have any idea how expensive hospitals can cost, then you know that the extra 20% IS A LOT OF MONEY that you will have to pay. Still, 80% is better than nothing. If you want the extra 20% covered, most people choose to get Part C, Part D, or Supplemental. There’s more information on that in the video below. Especially if you need hearing, vision and dental coverage, since Original Medicare WILL NOT cover that for you.
Part A covers emergency visits and some hospital procedures. When you become eligible for Original Medicare, the government might automatically enroll you into Part without you even having to do it yourself. That’s great! The government might also enroll you into Part D Prescription Drug Coverage at the same time.
Part B covers your basic doctor’s visits and SOME medical services. It does not cover everything you might expect. Original Medicare also does not cover hearing, dental, or prescription drugs. If you have any other questions, you can always, ALWAYS message me or send me an email. Medicare also has its own phone number and website medicare.gov.
There are 3 types of Medicare Plans. The first is called an Advantage Plan, also known as Part C. Part C covers hearing, vision, dental and prescription drugs. It’s important to know that Advantage Plans have copays when you go to the hospital for a visit, a procedure, etc. You’re probably already used to paying a copay with your current plan. Part C plans can be very different from each other, and many people choose plans that actually don’t cover prescriptions, hearing, vision, or dental because it’s all about personal choice. Qualifying veterans can choose plans which do not cover drugs, because they have military benefits that take care of that for them. And speaking of prescription drugs…
Part D plans are plans that ONLY cover prescriptions. Some people like only having Original Medicare and so they only need coverage for their prescriptions. Simple. Another reason for choosing a Part D plan, is because you have what’s known as a Supplement.
A Supplement costs you money every month in order to keep it. This is called a premium. They do not cover prescriptions, hearing, vision or dental. You will need to pay for these additional coverages from somewhere else, if you want these things covered. Supplements are wonderful plans, if you can afford them. They cover so much of the additional 20% that is not covered by Medicare. Many people who have supplements don’t EVER receive a medical bill for their procedures.
